| History: It was founded in 1666 as Cossack winter quarters at Uda r. for 'yasak' duty from Tunguses and Buryats. In 1689 Verkhneudinskiy ostrog was built. From 1690 administrative centre of western Trans-Baikalia. Incorporated from 1775 to provincial, from 1783 sheading city Verkhneudinsk of Irkutsk vicegernecy (later - province). From 1822 district centre of Irkutsk province, from 1851 - the centre of once more formed Transbaikalian region. Favourable economy-geographic position of Verkhneudinsk contrubuted to transformation of the city to the large trade centre of Trans-Baikalia. Via Kyakhta and Verkhneudinsk commerce with China proceeded. In 1899 via Verkhneudinsk Trans-Siberian way passed. Verkhneudinsk fair to the end of the 19 c. has a turnover up to 2 mln. roubles. In April - Octoer of 1920 Verkhneudinsk was the capital of Far East republic (DVR). In 1921-22 - the centre of autonomous region of Buryats entering in DVR. From 1923 the capital of Buryat-Mongolian ASSR, in 1958-92 - of Buryatian ASSR. In 1934 Verkhneudinsk was renamed to Ulan-Ude (Red Uda). |

| History: In 1653 explorer Peter Beketov with a group of Cossacks in the mouth of Chita river built Ingodinskoe winter quarters. The first regular Russian settlement at this place sprang up after 1675. Until 1687 it was called Sloboda. In 1699 Chita ostrog was built, from 1821 it was called Chitinskoe habitation. Decembrists were exiled here. From 1851 Chita was the centre of Transbaikalian region, here administration of Transbaikalian Cossack forces was situated. After construction of railway in 1900 Chita was the largest transport junction, industrial centre of Trans-Baikalia. In 1920-22 the capital of Far East republic. | History: It is known from 1689 as a winter quarters, in 1783 Sretensk ostrog was founded. Sheading city Sretensk from 1789. It was named by a chapel sanctified in Candlemas (Sretenie). In 1897 Trans-Siberian railway came to Sretensk. Steamboats ran from Sretensk to Blagoveshchensk and Khabarovsk. Sretensk was a typical merchant city, in 1910 40% percent of city population were trading. |
