How to travel by Russian railways... Answer here!
One can go by Transsib differently, it depends on your desires of course possibilities. Here are some recomendations about this problem proceeding from avaiable experience.

1. How to go by Transsib?

Firm trains. The most comfortable and fast trains at Transsib are Tablet of "Rossiya"firm trains number 1/2 "Rossiya" (Moscow - Vladivostok), 5/6 "Okean" (Khabarovsk - Vladivostok), 9/10 "Baikal" (Moscow - Irkutsk), 25/26 "Sibiryak" (Moscow - Novosibirsk), 55/56 "Yenisei" (Moscow - Krasnoyarsk) and a little more trains such class. They go by their route with less number of stops, sometimes by 300-400 km without stop, and haven't carriages with sitting seats and often haven't carriages with reserved seats. Their carriages are German production, new, with air-conditioners. But their cost is more another trains. People going their are rather impressive, there are many foreigners particularly in summer.

International trains - number 3/4 (Moscow - Beijing via Mongolia), 5/6 (Moscow - Train Moscow - BeijingUlan-Bataar), 19/20  (Moscow - Beijing via Manchuria) going to Mongolia and China that earlier also were rather comfortable now lost their status because turned in Sale of consumer goods from windows of train Moscow - Ulan-Bataarfavourite means of conveyance of Russian and Chinese "shuttles". So during stops of such trains at Uralian and Siberian station a platform is crowd of people feverishly making process of trade for the 15-20 minutes which are assigned by shedule for replacement of locomotive. So the carriages naturally are packed by "shuttle" goods to capacity (to trip in compartment of such train is rather non-comfortable, believe me). Perhaps so one must go in SV carriage because it's rather dear for shuttles... But there are no another alternative if you want to go into China and Mongolia exactly by train.

"Good" fast trains - typical their representative are number 7/8 (Novosibirsk - Vladivostok), 43/44 (Moscow - Khabarovsk), 11/12 (Chelyabinsk - Chita) differ from "bad" by quality of service by crew of attendants and carriages condition (they are not be in terrible condition or too old. Costs of fast train are lower firm and often "good" fast train by comfort level isn't worse some firm ones. As a rule fast train has more stops, particularly in the region (territory) of its maikng. Always at least 1-2 carriages with reserved seats or more. People in them are more ordinary that for example there are only a few foreigners in "Rossiya" (excluding Chinese and citizen of CIS states).

"Bad" fast and passenger trains - outstanding instances - number 53/54 (Kharkov - Vladivostok) and 249/250 (Moscow - Blagoveshchensk). There are rather many such trains on railways. Their distinctive features are unattractive appearance and interior (carriages are old or filthy), "quality" of service by attendants and dirt. If fast train runs in such condition, it just reflects attitude to passengers by railway line and the section where it's formed. What's about passenger trains, always attitude to them was as to second-rate. Passenger trains are cheapest, their shedule is made with most number of stops and more than a half of train are carriages with reserved seats and sitting seats. But there are exceptions - sometimes passenger trains are rather not bad.

Autostop - there are some sites about autostop descibing special features of specific routes including Trans-Siberian raiwlay. One can travel by Transsib by mail-luggage trains (last time carriages of local communication were started to cling to them), by local trains and actually by goods trains, with adherence to some elementary precautionary measures. For detailed information about this mode of travel we refer you to sites of auto-stopper #Trassa-Atlas and page of Anton Yerashevskiy.
