Rambler's Top100
To historical section Verstage of Transbaikal line
 Author: Sigachyov Sergey Gennadyevich (Khabarovsk)
Postcard of Transbaikal line with mistakeWhen I studied postcards of Great Siberian Line printed in plenty in the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century, I called my attention to the fact, texts to them often weren't in accordance with true state of affairs. The first and more widespread mistake was that verstage of the place on postcard was misquoted. One more mistake concerns date of the event: that is to say this place in indicated year looked already noy so or yet not so. The third much more infrequent mistake concerns the decription of the remarkable or view printed ar the postcard.
And many postcards with mistakes were collected at this site. For example look the picture of Khilok valley at Transbaikal line (fragment of the postcard is on the left).
In synopsis to the postcard it was indicated that it is "Permanent way along Khilok river at 640th verst". Is it so? On attentive examination one discovers that 640th verst of Transbaikal line is situated beyond Yablonovy range, much more eastern. But a publisher moved this view of Khilok valley... 200 versts! So it could be situated at 440th verst (it's most probably by condition of the locality), but simply couldn't at 640th or 540th verst. Let's look at another postcard: "View of Petrovsk iron mill at 201st verst". It's also lies: Petrovskiy Zavod station was situated at 288th verst but the mill was 1-2 verst to the east, so it was situated at 289-290th versts.

Here are grosser mistakes: insciption on the postcard: "Gross mistake in determination of represented placeCircumbaikal railway. The frontier between Manchuria and Russia". What one can tell about it? A publisher moved represented placed 1000 km to the west. Circumbaikal railway finished at Mysovaya station at Baikal; after more than 1000 versts Transbaikal line began and the frontier between Russia and Manchuria was situated at the branch to Chinese Eastern line laid via steppe Trans-Baikalia 300 km to the south-east of Transbaikal line. One more such gross mistake: "Circum-Baikal line. Kitaiskiy passing-track" (really this passing-track is situated 778 versts from the closer station of Circumbaikal line - Mysovaya).

More examples of gross mistakes: a postcard with inscription"Kurgan st." where really first Krasnoyarsk station is represented; or a postcard "Circum-Baikal railway. Way through taiga near Vydrino st." (there are no tunnels near Vydrino; really this place is situated at the section of Circum-Baikal more 100 km west of Vydrino).

What's the cause of these numerous mistakes? The point is that 90 - 100 years ago Great Siberian Way was very popular - ones wrote and talked about it much. Of course publishers of those days hurried to earn by reader's interest: often postcards with views of this greater arterial railway was published by small publishing houses without enough checking of contents and inscriptions were at postcards. That's the result.

So for simplification of orientation I want to publish accurate verstage of Transbaikal line: just at the postcards of this Great Siberian Way section the most procent of mistakes was found. By attetive examining of historical photos one can try to found oneself pre-revolutianory glitches :)
